Highlights from CrimeFest: Creating Sherlock

On Saturday June 1 2013, a special event was held in Bristol during CrimeFest, the International Crime Fiction Convention. Named ‘Creating Sherlock’, an early afternoon panel saw Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and Sue Vertue discuss the inception of the series and the status of production on the third, which is currently on a brief production hiatus until later in the summer. As Steven Moffat noted, in typically amusing fashion while acknowledging the protracted development of the new series around other projects, “We’ve just sort of stopped for a bit while Martin [Freeman] pops back to New Zealand for a bit to film more of The Hobbit. We’re actually going to resume shooting Sherlock next Christmas.” While Mark Gatiss jokingly concluded, “This is an exclusive, as it’s actually going to be nine films.”

By the nature of the event, there was of course a fair amount of repetition in what the panel were able to speak about - in particular, the creation of the series - which we have previously reported on in our coverage of The Sherlock Masterclass at MGEITF 2012 and The Game Is On: An Afternoon with Mark Gatiss and Friends. So instead, here we present a full selection of the best banter and observation from the creative team.

Goldney Hall also known as Goldney House is a self-catered hall of residence in Clifton, Bristol, one of three in the area providing accommodation for students at the University of Bristol.

The current Goldney House house was built in 1724, is a listed building and occupies a hilltop position overlooking the city of Bristol and Brandon Hill. The landscape garden is used for weddings and receptions.

Another day on set but it’s a last day in UK. In the morning I went to Harry Studio and back to town for the last shopping. =_____= (not my stuff at all) Again mistook for checking twitter and here we go again.

At first I can’t make my decision that I should go or not. But I really want to meet Martin so bad. Well… ditched everything to my sis and rush to the set.

ฺBut at the evening Benedict didn’t around the set anymore. :( but I saw Moffat before he leave. XD

By the time they set up some fan sent Martin a gift. XD His reaction was so cute. After shooting other scene Martin sneaked out from set quitely. Barely draw an attention but lucky me still had a chance to saw he leave. So I follow down to the street and another fans talked with him so I can catch up.

OMG!!! I still can’t believe that I had a chance to talk with Martin Freeman and at that time I understood , what’s star struck!!! Coz I lost my words. It’s hardly enough to speak with him but I had to speak English. My brain blank the only thing I can said was I’m come from Thailand and love the series so much. And look at him while we shook hand. So I asked for a photo he apologised that he couldn’t coz he said no to the other fan. But it’s OK when Martin Freeman talk with you and looking at you. XD My heart gonna blown up. and forget to asked for a sign. (-____________-#)

After he leave someone shout at him and said “I love you in AliGi” hahahhaha

By the way his hand so soft. more than me!!!

After wrap up Sue and Mark leave from set together. They’re kindly to gave fan a time for chat. I said good bye to Sue and asked for a sign. She very nice to add Bye bye with it. XD

But the lovely thing was another girl asked Sue too and she already got Moffat’s sign. So she said “aww, my husband” signed under his and draw a little heart between them. So cute.

And then Mark. He’s so nice and took a time with fans nearly 10 minutes. I already got his sign so I waiting for photo. My iPhone was dead so I had to ask someone took a picture by my DSLR. And yeah I got a blur picture. too bad. But the sad thing was the girl who I asked to take my pic. Asked me after she and her friend took pictures with Mark, ” Who is he???” Oh, woman if you don’t know don’t take a precious time from the fan!!!!

Well, that’s all. My UK trip. I took my time on set not that much, right?

Unfortunately I didn’t get to meet Benedict or Martin properly, but they were busy and probably just wanted to get somewhere warm. It may look warm in the photos but in fact it was very, very cold
